The 450% Problem: What Agentic AI Traffic Actually Means for Authority

Cisco reported in 2026 that a single agentic AI task can generate about 450% more network traffic than a human doing equivalent work. That number does not mean 450% more people, attention, customers, or authority.

It means machines can retrieve, exchange, and process dramatically more information while completing tasks. Cisco also projects enterprise WAN traffic could grow roughly ninefold by 2035 in an agentic-AI scenario, compared with about 2.5x without agentic AI.

Why infrastructure volume matters to identity

If agents operate at software speed, they can repeat whatever is already clear, confused, supported, outdated, or wrong at greater scale. That changes the cost of ambiguity. A weak identity signal is no longer encountered only by a human visitor. It may be retrieved into automated research, recommendation, summarization, routing, and decision workflows.

The authority implication is not “create more content because AI uses more bandwidth.” That would be a magnificent way to produce more digital landfill. The implication is that identity accuracy, evidence quality, attribution, and machine-readable clarity become more consequential as the number of machine-mediated decisions increases.

Machine volume is not human popularity

A brand should resist confusing infrastructure activity with influence. The useful question is whether the extra machine activity produces correct interpretation and better decisions. That is where Machine-Readable Authority™ sits: between being retrievable and being reliably understood.
