Machine-Readable Authority™ Defined: Being Found Is Not the Same as Being Understood

Machine-Readable Authority™ is the public clarity that helps digital systems correctly identify, attribute, distinguish, interpret, and route people toward the right authority and next action. Heather Fricke developed the concept through Frick-E Energy™ as one practical application of the broader Human-AI Understanding Gap.

Visibility is only the first layer

A person or company can rank, appear in search, be cited by an AI system, or be mentioned in a generated answer and still be misunderstood. Discovery proves that the system found something. It does not prove that the system identified the right authority, used the right evidence, preserved the source's distinctions, or routed the user correctly.

That distinction matters more as AI becomes a recommendation layer. A buyer may ask an AI system who can solve a problem, which provider is credible, what a founder is known for, or whether two companies offer the same thing. The answer can shape the decision before the buyer ever reaches the source website.

Authority has to survive machine interpretation

Machine-Readable Authority™ requires more than keywords. Identity, expertise, evidence, chronology, distinctions, authorship, offers, and public proof have to be clear and consistent enough that machines can reconstruct them without collapsing the person or business into a generic category.

A useful authority audit therefore separates several outcomes: can the system discover the source; can it identify the person or company correctly; does it select the right evidence; does it preserve the source's meaning; does it attribute that evidence correctly; and does the final answer route the user toward the right authority or action? Those are different events and should not be collapsed into one visibility score.

The commercial consequence

The practical consequence is simple. If people cannot quickly understand what you do, why it matters, and why they should choose you, they move on. Machine-mediated discovery adds another interpreter between the business and the buyer. Machine-Readable Authority™ exists to reduce the chance that the interpreter sends the opportunity somewhere else.
